MOSFET. THE REVOLUTION IN VOLTAGE REGULATORS

MOSFET transistors are used to amplify electronic waves. This technology has changed the concept of three phase voltage regulators.

For many years, classic voltage regulators have been using silicon control rectifies (SCR) to conduct to an earth ground the excess of power from generator to keep the battery power constantly. This fact works well in small and mid-size engines. Nevertheless, new voltage regulator technology used by MOSFET is becoming very popular because of its optimum performance besides many interesting advantages.

Nowadays, motorbikes and ATVs have increased their energy consumption due to additional electronic modules, such as injection, high efficiency lighting and multiple accessories. Therefore, this involves a large amount of energy requirement from the electric generator, which a classic generator this is unable to because of its low performance, internal energy losses lead to overheating and damage for conducting currents higher than 35A. Consequently, classic electric generators are outdated, and they are not suitable for large vehicles with high energy requirements.

A classic regulator has a voltage drop (about 1,5V-35Z) because they work like a power diode. As well as current increases the power dissipated (Heat) grows equally. However, using the new voltage regulator MOSFET, the voltage can be adjusted like a driver-controlled switch. With a completely different semi-conductive structure that lead in a better energy performance. When working, it performs with a major power and provides a low resistance that conducts all the remainder power from the generator to the earth ground. As a result, voltage drop is very low (less than 0,2V - 35A) and drastically reduces heat. This leads to lower heating and increases service life of generator.

MOSFET technology has been improving during the last years, because of its wide range of applications in the electronics sector.

Effective semiconduction integration has result in a major power in reduced spaces with an excellent performance. Therefore, it allows a quick switching, improved reliability and provides great control under adverse conditions.

MOSFET regulators use improved currents diodes with an extremely low voltage drop that avoid overheating the regulator. The internal driver has been completely redesigned to meet the riding requirements. Battery power is always controlled to adjust the output currents depending on the riding situation. The new electrical driver avoids using linear sense switched on, reduces the number of connections and the wiring topology. Besides, it is equipped with a standby mode that avoids losing battery charge when not using the vehicle. In conclusion, MOSFET regulator allows increasing the output currents up to 50A, with an excellent tension control and additional advantages such as low heating, high efficiency and advanced electric control. All of these, point out that this new regulator s the best value to manage the vehicle charging system.
